Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the urban poor communities residing in slums have been highly vulnerable on account of their occupation, unhygienic/ill maintained conditions of WASH facilities in the residing areas and high level of misperception regarding disease transmission. To tackle this, there is an urgent need to elevate the role of Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) in breaking the chains of transmission and mitigating the impact of the COVID-19, with a focus on appropriate and adequate information on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) encouraging behavioural change and ensuring safety through facilitating access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hygiene kits and WASH supplies.

Project Locations and Partners

Under the ‘Community outreach for promotion of IPC through WASH supplies and service delivery in vulnerable groups of urban Maharashtra’ project, the Coalition facilitated promotion of WASH and COVID Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) and service delivery of WASH supplies linked to the feedback and monitoring mechanism, with an involvement of key local stakeholders that have better reach to the targeted communities. The interventions were designed as a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model to ensure decentralization of efforts with cohesion of best practices. The activities were coordinated by the Secretariat, Maharashtra Urban WASH-ES Coalition (Hub) at the RCUES of AIILSG, Mumbai and implemented by the selected partner organisations (Spokes) in selected cities of Maharashtra.

PROJECT COMPONENTS

Knowledge Products

As part of the WASH-response to Covid 19 initiative of the Coalition, the Secretariat developed five knowledge products to disseminate the findings and learnings from the project among diverse institutions and ULBs. The various project activities from nine cities, experiences of the social mobilisers, community feedback, and audio and video testimonials of the people documented during the awareness activities, including community feedback, have been compiled into five different types knowledge products. The consolidated quantitative and qualitative data will be useful to various grassroots level organisations and ULBs, to develop interventions to improve WASH facilities in these selected as well as other cities with similar socio-economic settings. These knowledge products have been disseminated among various other stakeholders for knowledge sharing and promotion of IPC, CAB & WASH appropriate behaviour. They can be used for dissemination at workshops and training programs, to build capacities of beneficiaries.
