Focus Areas

Maharashtra, with a population of 112.4 million (Census 2011) is a highly urbanised state with 45.2 % population residing in the urban areas. Over the years, several initiatives and programmes have been launched in the State in the WASH and ES sectors to enhance the efficiency of service delivery in urban areas. The focus areas of the Coalition are Sanitation, Solid Waste Management, Water, Environment and Climate Change. The Coalition aims to bring together government departments, development partners, grassroots organisations and communities in the State for cohesive and comprehensive implementation of initiatives.

The key lessons learned from the past experiences under the key programmes like Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Service Level Benchmarking (SLB), and national competitions like Swachh Survekshan, etc. highlight the issues pertaining to varied capacities and efficiency of urban service delivery. These issues are primarily linked to the process of planning and implementation of programmes that had limited consideration for sustainability, climate sensitivity, equity, and informed community participation. The Coalition intends to base its initiatives on these key values as the key cross-cutting areas across the selected subject focus areas, as applicable.
